How to spot fakes - GBA Pokemon games

When buying games off people, and on the internet, it’s important to know what you’re getting isn’t a cheap bootleg copy. Bootleg copies often don’t save, and have other internal issues, and buying one for what you would pay for a real copy is just ripping yourself off.

Bootleg copies often have:

  • Missing or distorted Official Nintendo seal (above examples have a distorted but visible seal, which is an oval, not a circle like it should be)
  • Have a distorted or resized logo
  • List a game not originally for GBA/DS/etc (eg. Crystal for GBA)
  • The background is different, or lacks the shinyness that legit copies have
  • The game cartridge is slightly off-colour, or a different colour entirely.
  • May have additional stickers on the back (my bootleg Emerald copy has “Prokemon Game - Don’t Open”, yes.. ‘Prokemon”)
  • May not be an actual released game (I’ve seen a bootleg “OceanBlue” with a Blastoise on it)

Note, there are differences between US/AUS games, but the same rule applies. The pictures on the right are an example of legit AUS games.

Internally the game may:

  • Not save.
  • Has a strange loading screen
  • Error messages
  • Be a completely different game to the case sticker/box
  • Not load up at all
  • Have a badly translated dialogue (if you’re curious, type in Pokemon Vietnamese Crystal, it’s become notorious)

Remember, never buy a game from anyone unless you can see the physical game, or a picture of the actual game. It saves from a lot of frustration from getting a cheap ass copy.
